Create Your Own Outdoor Oasis with an Outdoor Fireplace

Spring is taking its sweet time arriving this year in many areas. Here in Minnesota, we’re more than ready for warm breezes, blooming flowers and green grass. Are you dreaming about time spent outdoors too? Well, you’re not alone!

Americans love the outdoors. While the average home size has shrunk, a growing number of homeowners are choosing to add outdoor living areas to maximize their space for entertaining and living. In even the coldest areas of the country the trend continues gaining momentum. And at the heart of the coziest outdoor spaces are – you guessed it – fire features. A fireplace is all it takes to transform a run-of-the-mill outdoor space into an “outdoor oasis.”

People love outdoor fires. So much so that a recent survey by the American Society of Landscape Architects reported that 66% of respondents rated outdoor fireplaces and fire pits as the most desired outdoor design element for homeowners in 2018, beating out other elements like lighting, wireless connectivity and outdoor theater/music systems.

And with coronavirus lockdowns in place throughout recent memory, demand for outdoor living rooms with luxe finishes has gone through the roof. “Luxury hotels around the world offer remarkable balconies for yoga, or fire features for making s’mores,” said Kate Bailey, senior director of category management for the Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery chain in a recent Forbes article, pointing out that homeowners are looking to recreate those experiences at home. This desire accelerated as the pandemic continued on over school breaks and long weekends, with families spending more time at home than away.

Even as the pandemic winds down, the fireplace remains the focal point outdoors and is where everyone wants to gather. For ideas on how to layout your outdoor space around a fire feature, we gathered up some of our favorite installations featuring fireplaces and fire pits.
